Berlin, September 17, 2021 – Open Source email monitoring and automation tool Lightmeter has been awarded nearly $10,000 in services to support their work in keeping email an open ecosystem for universal communication, free of centralised control. The Open Technology Fund, a Non-Profit funded by the Congress of the United States, has issued the support to add a new dashboard interface to Lightmeter, including usability research and design by Open Source specialists Ura Design.
“As well as being the world’s largest communication network, email is also the largest identity database, providing the gateway to digital services for approximately 84% of earth’s population. Lightmeter enables people to use email on their own terms, free and unimpeded, perfectly aligning our mission with Open Tech Fund”— Said Sam Tuke, Founder and CEO of Lightmeter.
“On average people check email 15 times each day, but the technology behind the inbox is extremely complex. OTF’s support means that technical email infrastructure will become easier than ever to use as a result of Lightmeter’s email server control panel benefiting from user-centric UX methods and research”— Said Renata Gegaj, Lead UX Researcher at Ura Design.
Email is a decentralised network of over 4 m servers which use a combination of many different software components for sending, forwarding, filtering, and storing messages. Lightmeter provides high-level monitoring of Open Source Postfix mailservers, which account for approximately 63% of servers currently in operation. It notifies users when communication is disrupted, including when emails are blocked or delayed, or the server is under attack. In doing so it makes email easier to run without relying on third parties, who may surveil or otherwise exploit access to the end-user’s communications.
The Open Technology Fund works to advance internet freedom in repressive environments. They support the research, development, implementation, and sustainability of technologies that provide secure and uncensored access to the Internet, to counter attempts by authoritarian governments to control it and restrict freedom online.
Lightmeter is the first Open Source email delivery monitoring tool in the industry. It simplifies the job of hundreds of thousands of mail server administrators, making mail deliverability transparent and aiding in fixing deliverability issues.
